hey im just new and i know quite a bit bout engines n all cuz ive bin obsessed wit them since i was like 8 and ive bin trying to find out sum stuff bout external wastegates. from wot i know the wastegate is used to divert the exhaust flow into the exhaust system instaed of goin into the turbines therefor spining and creating boost. but wot i dont get is external wastegates, they said that they divert the exhaust flow into the atmoshpere and not into the exhaust system and if so then wot is the need for a exhaust system then? becuz the exhaust flow will be goin into either the atmosphere or the turbo. i dont get it can u guys plz help me out here

English please from now on, reading that makes my head hurt. In any case...
(I'm exhausted, if this is wrong or whatever, I blame it on that.)
Physics is what makes you want to have an external wastegate and an exhaust. When you go WOT, and the pressure from the exhaust is enough to spin the turbine and build boost, you need to divert it at some point to keep even flow over the turbine. Now, exhaust gas will only go to the point of least resistance, now which one do you think has more back pressure, the exhaust (which has a turbine blade in the way.) or... outside air?

For the record, not everything Varga has written on this site was absolutely correct.

I just put the link there because it was easy, all the info was there so I thought well why not. But I guess if not everything Varga says is correct then people are still open to share their opinions about the subject.

external wastegates act as an emergency blowoff for excess exhaust gasses going into the turbo. instead of recycling the exhaust gasses through the turbo to spin the turbine, the wastegate releases it into the exhaust manifold and it leaves the engine without going to the turbo. this is used when the turbo is giving off to much boost to lessen the amount of boost going through the engine. this keeps your turbo and the rest of your engine for overheating.
